The Party
The Prohibition Party, founded in September 1869, is the oldest continuously-active third party in the United States. It was founded to campaign for legislation to prohibit the manufacture and sale of hard liquor, and has nominated candidates for national office in every presidential election cycle since 1872. The party reached the peak of its national strength in the elections of 1888 and 1892, polling two percent of the popular vote. |
The Platform
James Black was the party's first candidate for president in the election of 1872. Initially a Republican, Black was committed to anti-alcohol activism and joined the Prohibition Party - the 1872 platform creating our signature issue. As we move towards election day 2024 we believe our party platform reflects inclusivity, tolerance and appeals with a positive reform message more directly to the constituents of today. |
