THE CANDIDATE
Michael WOOD
The Prohibition Party is the oldest living third party in the United States and has run a presidential ticket in every election since 1872. At its 2023 quadrennial convention in Buffalo, New York, the convention selected Michael Wood as the Prohibition Party candidate for President and John Pietrowski as its candidate for Vice-President.
Michael Wood is a fifth generation Californian and recently retired CEO of a multinational company. His work has taken him to both coasts of the USA as well as living in both Europe and Asia. An active member of the Prohibition Party, since retirement he has been elected to both the Prohibition National Committee and the Executive Committee of the Prohibition Party. He works closely with other party leaders to help set a course for the long-term success of the party. In his free time, he volunteers 500 hours a year at a food bank to help those struggling with food security. He is an avid historian, genealogist and writer.
At the party’s National Convention, Wood said “Carrying a name deeply rooted in American political history is both a blessing and a curse. Perhaps better referred to as PRO2024, the party’s current platform is one of equality and inclusiveness, that emphasizes public health, educated choices and personal responsibility. Far too many people associate the party with a nationwide ban on alcohol, when in fact the Prohibition Party defends your American right to drink privately, but not your right to do public harm.”
Believing that benign personal behavior should not be regulated by the federal government, Wood added, “If you wish to drink, that is each informed citizen’s right. We recognize however that many people are not well informed about the dangers of alcohol, a drug which contributes to 140,000 deaths in our country each year. When private behavior has public consequences, such as drinking and driving or the $250 billion economic cost associated with excessive alcohol use, that becomes a legitimate governmental concern. We hope to work closely with MADD and other organizations striving to raise awareness of the problem of alcohol and drug related deaths.”
When asked about platform specifics, Wood added “Alcohol advertising, especially ads targeting sweetened and flavored drinks to America’s youth, is a public problem that needs to be addressed. Just as the ban on cigarette advertising greatly reduced the number of young smokers in our country, we believe a ban on alcohol advertising would find similar success. While the question of alcohol and drug abuse remains our signature issue, we are not just a single-issue party. The Prohibition Party has a broad platform that tackles many of the important issues facing our country. We aim to present voters with a positive alternative to the two major parties and a way for our country to move forward together.”
